Abrahams, P.

Abrahams, P.

...The achievements of contemporary Swahili writers such as Penina Muhando (1948-), Euphrase Kezilahabi (1944-), and others cannot be considered without Shaaban's contributions. The same can be said of writers such as Peter Abrahams (1919-), Mphahlele, and La Guma, who portrayed the brutal experiences of apartheid and brought contemporary South African literature to the world stage. In South Africa, through the lineage of suicide writers such as Can Themba (1924-69) and Nat Nakasa (1937-65), the spirit of resistance and rebellion has been inherited in the works of urban proletarian writers such as Mafika Gwala (1946-), Mtutuzeli Matshoba (1950-), and Mbulelo Mzamane (1948-), but the foundation for this was laid by southern Bantu writers such as Sotho writer Thomas Mofolo (1875-1948), Xhosa writer Samuel Mqhayi (1875-1945), and Zulu writer R. Dhlomo (1901-).

What is common to the United States is the attitude of protest against racial discrimination, but other characteristics include opposition to colonial rule by European powers and fantastical elements rooted in folk tales and mythology. Excellent writers such as N. Guillen of Cuba, C. Achebe of Nigeria, Peter Abrahams of South Africa, Ngugi of Kenya, and LS Senghor of Senegal emerged after World War II, but many of them fled to Europe and the United States due to the chaotic political situation that followed. …
