French actor. Her husband, Georges Pitoëff (1884-1939), was a more accomplished director. Born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Russia, to a theater manager, Georges studied under Stanislavsky and Dalcroze before moving to Paris in 1914. The following year he married Ludmilla (1895-1951), and moved to Geneva, where he recruited amateurs, first performing in Russian and then in French, and gradually winning recognition for his performances of Chekhov, Ibsen, Lenormand, and others.
