Located 83km south of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, it is the third largest city in the state. It has a population of 254,000 (1995). It is the central city of the Illawarra region. It is located near a coalfield (mining began in 1849) and is a representative heavy chemical industrial city in the country. In particular, its main industry, steel (started in 1928), is the largest in the country (annual production of 3 million tons of crude steel, approximately 20,000 employees). Other industries such as copper refining and chemicals are also developed. Port Kembla is an industrial and harbor area, and iron ore is imported from Port Hedland (northwest of Western Australia) and coal and steel products are exported.
