The following year, Joseph Cotte (1875-1949) opened the Athénée Français in Tokyo, where he taught French language, French literature, Greek and Latin, and opened the eyes of many Japanese to French culture. France, worried about the decline of interest in France since the end of the Edo period in the face of the influence of German culture, which was centered on German language education in the old high schools, first sent Marshal Joffre to Japan after World War I, and then sent many envoys, including the Orientalist Courant. …
