…Located in the southwestern suburbs of London, this garden city is famous for its mineral springs and horse racing. The mineral springs were discovered around 1618 and were used to produce Epsom salts. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it flourished as a resort comparable to Bath in the west. The horse racing began during the reign of James I and became a regular event around 1730.
