A city in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the middle reaches of the Kikuchi River and the southern part of the Chikuhi Mountains. The city center has developed as a post town and hot spring town since the Edo period, and buses run from Kumamoto City, Tamana City, and other cities. Rice is grown along the river, and greenhouses, tobacco, and root vegetables are grown in the hills. Electrical-related industries account for nearly three-quarters of the total shipping value, with sewing and sake brewing also taking place. National Route 3 runs through the center of the city. Yamaga Onsen is located on the right bank of the Kikuchi River, and has an alkaline simple spring of 39°C. Kumai Onsen is also located in the north. There are decorated ancient tombs such as Nabeta Yokoana and Chibusan Kofun (both historic sites). In the south, there is a Meiji-era playhouse, Yachiyoza, and the lantern festival at Yamaga Omiya Shrine (August 15th and 16th) is famous. In January 2005, the towns of Kakita, Kikuka, Kamoto, and Kao in Kamoto County were incorporated into the city. 299.69km2 . 55,391 people (2010).

熊本県北西部の市。1954年市制。菊池川中流域と筑肥山地南部を占め,中心市街は江戸時代から宿場町,温泉町として発達,熊本市,玉名市などからバスが通じる。川沿いでは米作,丘陵地では施設園芸,タバコ,根菜類の栽培が行われる。工業は電機関連が出荷額全体の4分の3近くを占め,ほかに縫製,酒造などが行われる。市中央を国道3号線が通じる。山鹿温泉は菊池川の右岸にあり,アルカリ性単純泉,39℃。北には熊入温泉もある。鍋田横穴,チブサン古墳(ともに史跡)などの装飾古墳がある。南部に明治時代の芝居小屋,八千代座があり,山鹿大宮神社の灯籠祭(8月15・16日)は有名。2005年1月鹿本郡鹿北町,菊鹿町,鹿本町,鹿央町を編入。299.69km2。5万5391人(2010)。
