Epsomite - Epsomite (English spelling)

A soluble magnesium sulfate hydrate mineral that forms on the surface of rocks exposed on the earth's surface or inside mines. It is also called epsom salt. Chemically it is the same as magnesium sulfate. It can occur as a product of hot springs and cold springs, or as a product of evaporite origin, but in Japan it is mostly the former. Incidentally, in its place of origin, Epsom, England, it occurs in cold spring water. Its existence on the surface of Mars is considered certain. It is euhedral, a short columnar shape with nearly square asymmetric eaves, but it is rare to find it in nature. It is easily formed indoors. Naturally it is often fibrous, hairy, woolly or membrane-like, and can also have a settlement-like, kidney-like or stalactite-like appearance. It is soluble. The solution has a bitter taste. It was named after its place of origin.

地表や坑内に露出する岩石の表面に生成する、可溶性の含水マグネシウム硫酸塩鉱物。瀉利塩(しゃりえん)、エプソム塩ともいう。化学的には硫酸マグネシウムと同一。温泉・冷泉の生成物として、あるいは蒸発岩起源の生成物として産することもあるが、日本では前者の産状のものがほとんどである。ちなみに原産地イギリスのエプソンでは冷泉の水に産する。火星表面での存在が確実視されている。自形は正方形に近い上下非対称の庇(ひ)面が発達する短柱状であるが、天然ではまれ。室内では容易に生成される。天然のものは多く繊維状、毛髪状、羊毛状あるいは皮膜状をなすほか、集落様、腎臓(じんぞう)様あるいは鍾乳(しょうにゅう)石様の外観をなすこともある。可溶性。溶液は渋い味がする。命名は原産地にちなむ。
