…A city in Surrey, southeast England. It merged with Ewell to the north to form an autonomous city, with a population of 69,230 (1981). Located in the southwestern suburbs of London, it is a garden city famous for its mineral springs and horse racing. The mineral springs were discovered around 1618 and were used to produce Epsom salt, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it flourished as a resort comparable to Bath in the west. Horse racing began during the reign of James I and became a regular event around 1730. Currently, the Derby race, held on the first Wednesday in June at the Epsom Downs racecourse in the south of the city, and the Oaks race, held on the Saturday of the same week, are world-famous. …

It began in 1780 at Epsom Racecourse (suburban London) in England, the birthplace of modern horse racing, and was named after its founder, Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Lord Derby. The winner of this race, which competes for the best four-year-old horse (three years old), is considered the highest honor in British horse racing. During the First and Second World Wars, the race was moved to Newmarket Racecourse, but it has never been missed since its inception, and is usually held on a Wednesday in the last week of May or the first week of June (this day is called Derby day). …
