The name of the Kyushu Railway Company's track that runs from northern Fukuoka Prefecture to northern Saga Prefecture. 42.6 km between Meinohama and Karatsu, 25.7 km between Yamamoto and Imari. Only the 12.7 km between Meinohama and Chikuzen-Maebaru is double track, and the Meinohama-Karatsu section is DC electrified. It runs through the Fukuoka Plain, the coast of Karatsu Bay, and the Matsuura River basin. Between 1923 and 1935 (Taisho 12 to Showa 10), the Kitakyushu Railway opened the Hakata-Imari section, and in 1937 it was nationalized and became the Chikuhi Line. After the Second World War, urbanization of the western suburbs of Fukuoka City progressed, and electrification of the Chikuhi Line was planned along with the construction of the Fukuoka Municipal Subway. In 1983, electrification of the Meinohama-Karatsu-Nishi Karatsu (Karatsu Line) section was completed, and mutual operation with the municipal subway that connects at Meinohama began. At the same time, the Hakata-Meinohama section, which bypassed the southwestern part of Fukuoka City, was abolished, and the Niji-no-Matsubara-Higashi Karatsu-Yamamoto section, which had a complicated route layout even near Karatsu, was abolished, and a new Niji-no-Matsubara-Karatsu section was built, shortening the route (the 7.4 km section between Karatsu and Yamamoto overlaps with the Karatsu Line). The section between Karatsu and Imari is not electrified, and diesel railcars are used. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the line became part of Kyushu Railway Company.
