Set nets are literally fishing gear that are set up in a fixed location for a long period of time, and are also called set nets. Fishing carried out using set nets is called set net fishing. The basic structure is a fence net that blocks and guides the movement of fish schools, and a body net (or bag net) to catch the fish schools. Since it is a passive fishery that waits for the arrival of fish schools, selecting the location to set up the net is important. When there were many schools of fish migrating to the coast and large-scale fishing gear was used by many people, set net fishing played an important role in coastal fisheries, but the importance of set net fishing has declined due to the decline in fishery resources, the deterioration of the coastal environment, and the advancement of other fisheries (purse seine fishing and bottom trawl fishing). 定置網は文字通り一定の場所に長期間設置しておく網漁具で，建網類とも呼ばれる。定置網を用いて営む漁業が定置網漁業である。魚群の移動を遮断し誘導する垣網と，その魚群をとりあげるための身網(あるいは囊（ふくろ）網)とから成るのが基本的な構造である。魚群の来遊を待つ受動的な漁業であるので，設置場所の選定が重要である。沿岸に来遊する魚群が多く，多くの人手で大規模な漁具を用いていたころは沿岸漁業の中で重要な位置を占めたが，水産資源の減少，沿岸環境の悪化，他の漁業(巻網漁業や底引網漁業)の進歩につれて，定置網漁業の重要性は低下してきた。
