...One of the manufacturers at that time was Tokuji Hayakawa (founder of the electrical machinery company Sharp). The "Screw Pencil" and "Propeller Pencil" that went on sale in 1915 were renamed the "Everready Mechanical Pencil" the following year, and since then mechanical pencils have been the general term in Japan (called mechanical pencils in English). In 1960, synthetic resin cores were developed in Japan, making it possible to manufacture extremely thin cores with diameters of 0.2 mm or 0.1 mm.
