Windows

The name of the operating system (OS) for personal computers developed by the American company Microsoft. Most PCs sold on the market are sold with Windows already installed. MS-DOS was once the mainstream OS for PCs, but with the development of technology, Windows became the norm because it has a GUI and is easier to use.

Microsoft released Windows 1.0 in 1985, but it wasn't until Windows 3.0, released in 1990, that Windows became widespread. It was subsequently improved to Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and so on. Initially, Windows was created as a GUI that ran on MS-DOS, but from Windows 95 onwards, it made great strides as a 32-bit OS and an independent OS that also included the functions of MS-DOS. For high-performance workstations and server systems, Windows NT was developed as a new OS with a different basic structure from Windows, which was based on MS-DOS. As of the end of 2012, the latest version of Windows is Windows 8, but Windows Vista, Windows 2000 (the successor to Windows NT 4.0), and Windows XP are also widely used. There are also versions such as Windows CE and Windows Mobile for personal digital assistants (PDAs), and Windows Server, an OS for servers.

Windows not only functions as an operating system, but also comes with a built-in WWW browser, instant messaging software, and software for playing music and videos.

アメリカのマイクロソフト社が開発したパーソナルコンピュータ（パソコン）用のオペレーティングシステム（OS）の名称。市場で販売されているほとんどのパソコンは、あらかじめウィンドウズが動く状態にされ販売されている。かつてパソコン用のOSは、MS-DOSが主流であったが、技術の発達とともに、GUIをもち扱いやすくなったウィンドウズが一般的になった。

　マイクロソフト社は1985年にWindows 1.0を発売したが、普及したのは1990年に登場したWindows 3.0からである。その後もWindows 3.1、Windows 95、Windows 98、Windows Meなどへと改良を重ねていった。当初のウィンドウズはMS-DOS上で動作するGUIとしてつくられていたが、Windows 95からは32ビットのOSとして、MS-DOSの機能も包含した独立のOSとして大きく進歩した。また高性能ワークステーションおよびサーバー・システム向けには、MS-DOSを土台にしたWindowsとは基本構造が異なる新しいOSとしてWindows NTが開発された。2012年末の時点でのウィンドウズの最新バージョンはWindows 8だが、Windows Vistaや、Windows NT 4.0の後継であるWindows 2000、Windows XPも多く使われている。また、携帯情報端末（PDA）用のWindows CEとWindows Mobile、サーバー用OSのWindows Serverというバージョンもある。

　ウィンドウズには単なるOSとしての機能だけではなく、WWWブラウザー、インスタントメッセージングのソフトウェア、音楽やビデオを再生するソフトウェアなどがあらかじめ内蔵されている。
