Its origins date back to the Genki era (1570-73), when the Kaifu clan built Kaifu Castle (Tomo Castle) in Tomoura. Even after the Hachisuka clan entered Awa, it continued to be valued as a strategic location on the border between Awa and Tosa, and Okuura flourished as a castle town.
