A perennial plant of the Begoniaceae family. Native to southern China. It grows well in shady, moist places. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes, and some have become naturalized. It has a round tuber underground and a fleshy stem that grows to a height of about 60 cm. The leaves are alternate, distorted ovate, 8-15 cm long, and have long stalks. From late summer to autumn, beautiful red flowers are borne in sparse cymes at the ends of the branches. It is monoecious. It has two large calyxes and two small petals. The capsule has three wings and contains many seeds. It can also reproduce by producing small gemmae in the leaf axils that fall to the ground and become new seedlings.
