[Characteristics and Outlook]
The characteristics of Japan's communications equipment industry are (1) the high weight of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) group, and (2) the high weight of major manufacturers such as NEC and Fujitsu. Looking at the demand structure in 1997, the NTT group accounted for 35.9% of the total on an order basis, almost equal to the 36.5% of private demand.
