Rozanji Temple

Japanese: 廬山寺 - ろざんじ
Rozanji Temple

The head temple of the Enjo sect is located in Kitanobe-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. It is known as Nihon Rozan. The principal image is a statue hand-made by Gansan Daishi. It is said to have begun in 938 (Tenkei 1) when Gansan Daishi (Jie Daishi Ryogen) opened Yogan Kongo-in Temple in Kitayama. In 1245 (Kangen 3), it was moved to the southern foot of Mt. Funaoka and rebuilt by Kakuyu. The temple's name was changed to Rozan Tendai Koji. It was later destroyed by fire during the Onin War and other events, and was moved to its current location. The temple treasure, a handwritten message by Jie Daishi, is a national treasure. The silk-painted female Fugen Jurasetsu statue, the wooden Nyoirin Kannon half-seated statue, the petition of Emperor Gofushimi written in ink on paper, the selected collection written in ink on paper, the petition to the wife of Emperor Ogimachi written in ink on paper, and the twenty-six articles of the petition of Master Jie are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The current location is the former residence of Murasaki Shikibu. The "Oni no Horaku" ritual held at the Setsubun festival to drive away evil plagues is famous.
