Telescopic observations began in 1611 by four people: J. Fabricius, G. Galilei, C. Scheiner, and T. Harriot (1560-1621). The results were published in G. Galilei's Letter on Sunspots (1613) and C. Scheiner's Rosa ursina sive sol (1626-30). They concluded that sunspots were not planets but a solar phenomenon because their shape and size change as they move, and derived the solar rotation period from their movement.
