Amagi azalea - Amagi azalea

A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It grows to a height of 2-5 meters. The leaves grow in whorls of three at the ends of the branches, are broad diamond-shaped, 5-10 cm long, and covered with long brown hairs. It flowers in June and July after the leaves have opened. The corolla is crimson red, has five lobes, is 5-6 cm across, has 10 stamens, and the ovary is densely covered with white hairs. It grows wild on Mt. Amagi and Mt. Higane in Shizuoka Prefecture. A similar species, Rhododendron sanctum Nakai, also blooms after the leaves open, but its corolla is purple-red. It is propagated by seed.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の落葉低木。高さは2～5メートル。葉は枝先に3枚輪生状につき、広菱(りょう)円形、長さ5～10センチメートルで表面に褐色の長毛が生える。花は6～7月、葉が開いてから咲く。花冠は朱赤色で5裂し、径5～6センチメートル、雄しべは10本あり、子房に白毛を密生する。静岡県天城山、日金(ひがね)山などに野生する。同系統のジングウツツジR. sanctum Nakaiも開葉後に開花するが、花冠が紫赤色である。繁殖は実生による。
