Tamatsushima

Located in the southern part of Wakaura, Wakayama City. It was once an island, but is now connected to the mainland. There is Tamatsushima Shrine, and it was visited by many emperors. Its name appears in a long poem composed by Yamabe no Akahito on the occasion of Emperor Shomu's visit. Behind the shrine is Mount Tengu, and there are many famous sites nearby, such as Mount Imose and Kankaikaku, which are also mentioned as utamakura (poems) in works such as the Kokinshu and Gosenshu.

和歌山市和歌浦の南部の地。かつては島であったが、いまは陸続きである。玉津島神社があり、天皇の行幸が多く、聖武(しょうむ)天皇行幸の際に山部赤人(やまべのあかひと)が詠んだ長歌にもその名がみえる。神社の背後に奠供山(てんぐやま)、また付近に妹背山(いもせやま)、観海閣などの名跡が多く、歌枕(うたまくら)として『古今集』『後撰(ごせん)集』などにも詠まれている。
