Abū al‐'Atāhiya

Abū al‐'Atāhiya
748 to 750 - 825 to 828
A poet of the Abbasid period. A member of the Anazza tribe, he was born near Medina and grew up in Kufa. He started out as a potter, but his poetic talent was recognized and he became the court poet of Baghdad. After a broken heart, he completely changed his previous style of poetry, which was optimistic and centered on love, to a melancholic and pessimistic one. This change deepened his skeptical and philosophical pietism, and he wrote religious poetry in simple idiom that was understandable to the common people, and in later generations he has been revered as a leading figure in the field.
