Edo Domain Residence

...the residences of various feudal lords located in Edo and its suburbs. Initially, the wives and children of outside feudal lords were allowed to reside in Edo, and the shogunate also provided land for residences as appropriate, but after the establishment of the alternate attendance system in 1635 (Kan'ei 12), the establishment of Edo residences by various feudal lords became commonplace, and their locations were planned accordingly. In particular, after the Great Fire of Meireki (1657), the residences were divided into upper, middle, and lower, with the upper residences being, in principle, located in Nishimarushita, Marunouchi, Sotosakurada, and Atagoshita, the middle residences in the area along the inner edge of the outer wall of Edo Castle, and the lower residences in the suburbs.
