Tanaka Michimaro
Year of death: Tenmei 4.10.4 (1784.11.16)
Year of birth: 1724
A Japanese classics scholar of the mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Mohichi, and later Shobei. He went by the pen name of Haruki-o. He was born into a farming family in Haruki, Tagi-gun, Mino (Yoro-cho, Gifu Prefecture). He became the apprentice of Osugi Nakayabu in Hikone, Omi, and devoted himself to the study of Japanese classics. He later moved to Nagoya and studied under Motoori Norinaga, becoming one of Norinaga's most loyal disciples. Norinaga also had deep trust in Michimaro's academic talent. His main research subject was the Manyoshu, and his dialogue with Norinaga reveals the level of Manyoshu research at the time. A copy of his family anthology, Tanaka Michimaro Zenshu, has been handed down to us. <References> Iwata Takashi, "Draft Chronology of Tanaka Michimaro" (Nagoya Institute of Technology Bulletin, No. 29), and Iwata Takashi, "A Study of the Chronology of Haruki-o" (Nagoya Institute of Technology Bulletin, No. 30)
