Coquelin, (Benoît) Constant
Born: January 23, 1841, Boulogne-sur-Mer
[Died] January 27, 1909. Pontaudame. French actor. Commonly known as "Elder Coquelin." He studied at the Conservatoire, and was welcomed into the Comédie-Française in 1860, becoming an official member in 1864. He played many servant roles in classical comedies, and gained fame for his role as Figaro at the age of 22. In 1886, he left the company and toured Europe and America. From 1890 to 1892, he returned to the Comédie-Française for a short time, but returned to a European tour again, and thereafter appeared mainly at the Théâtre de la Boulevard. After a stint at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, he premiered Cyrano de Bergerac at the Théâtre de Porte Saint-Martin in 1897, which was a huge hit, with 400 performances. In his later years, he devoted himself to founding a nursing home for actors in Pontaudame, where he died. His books include "Art and the Actor" (1880). His younger brother Ernest (1848-1909) was just as great an actor, and his son Jean (1865-1944) also became an actor.
