Born: circa 1450, Lisbon Died March 1, 1510. Portuguese military officer and colonial administrator along the Table Bay coast. First Governor-General of India (in office 1505-09). Appointed as the first Viceroy of India by King Manuel I (Fortunate) in 1505, he landed at Quiloa with a powerful fleet and occupied it without resistance. He based his base in Cochin, which was established by A. Albuquerque in 1503. To establish Portuguese sovereignty, he built forts on the islands of Anguediba and Canaan, while also concluding a trade treaty with Malacca. In 1508, his son Lourenço was killed in a surprise attack by the Egyptian navy at Shor, so in 1509, in revenge, he burned and destroyed ports along the coast, including Goa and Dabur. In 1508, Albuquerque arrived as his successor, but he did not recognize him and imprisoned him. However, in November of the following year, he decided to take over, and in December, he set sail for Europe. On the way, in March 2010, when he landed at Table Bay to replenish with water, he was attacked and killed by the Khoisan people. Almeida |
