...In mid- to high-latitude regions, temperatures and weather conditions are different depending on whether the wind is from the north or south. Therefore, the polar and tropical regions have different air characteristics, and low pressure systems are considered to be giant whirlpools between these two types of air. Swedish meteorologist Tor Harold Percival Bergeron (1891-1977) was interested in air masses, which are collections of air with unique properties on both sides of low pressure systems, and introduced the concept of air masses in 1928. In slow-moving large high pressure systems, the air moves slowly except at the edges, and when they are over a uniform surface such as a continent or ocean, the properties of the air are assimilated to the thermal properties of the surface. ...
