Medieval drama

Japanese: 中世劇 - ちゅうせいげき

A general term for the various theatrical performances that took place in the Middle Ages in Europe. When discussing the history of European theater, this classification is sometimes made in parallel with classical drama (ancient drama) and modern drama, but in the case of medieval drama in particular, the classification itself has no meaning other than to indicate a rough period, and therefore includes a variety of plays with different processes of formation, contents, and artistic forms. However, even with this premise, if we look specifically at the theater that took place during this period, the largest trend can be said to be the so-called medieval religious drama, which originated from Christian liturgy around the beginning of the 10th century, gradually became larger and more secularized, and culminated in about the 13th century as passion plays and sacred history plays.

ヨーロッパ中世に行われたさまざまな演劇の総称。ヨーロッパ演劇史を語る場合に，古典劇(古代劇)や近代劇と並列される形でときにこの分類が行われるが，特にこの中世劇の場合に，その分類自体は大ざっぱな時代的区分を示す以上には意味をもたず，したがってそのなかには成立の過程，内容，芸態を異にする種々の演劇が含まれることになる。　しかし，そのようなことを前提にしつつも，この時代に行われた演劇を具体的に眺めるならば，最も大きな潮流は，およそ10世紀の初めにキリスト教の典礼から発し，しだいに大規模化，世俗化して，およそ13世紀のころには集大成されて受難劇，聖史劇となったいわゆる中世宗教劇の流れといえる。
