Born: January 13, 1804 in Paris Died November 24, 1866. Paris. French printmaker and watercolorist. Particularly known as a social satirist. Real name Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier. Initially studied at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, he painted as a hobby, but began publishing print albums and eventually gained public recognition. He produced satirical lithographs, such as Les Lorettes (1841-43), which featured women as his speciality. He contributed to the newspaper Charivari, and stayed in London from 1847 to 1851, where he also contributed to newspapers there. After returning to Japan, he serialized the series Masks and Expressions (1852-53) in the newspaper Paris.
