According to J. G. Tarde, the pattern that makes up society is the imitation of other people by other people. Young children imitate the behavior of adults. There is something off in their imitation, and this off-puttingness is a constant source of entertainment for the family. Even as adults, those who are skilled at imitating others can perform in the entertainment of the workplace, or appear on stage or on television as professionals, providing entertainment to society at large. In such cases, the off-puttingness between the person they are imitating is brought about consciously, and this off-puttingness serves as satire on the subject.

社会を成り立たせている様式は，J.G.タルドによれば，人による人の模倣である。幼い子どもはおとなのしぐさを真似する。そのまねには，どこかずれているところがあり，そのずれが，家庭にとって絶えざる楽しみの源泉である。おとなになってもものまねの巧みな人は，職場の余興でも演ずることができるし，舞台にたったり，テレビに出たりして，専門家としてひろく社会に娯楽を与える。その場合にまねする対象との間のずれは意識的にもたらされるものであり，そのずれが対象に対する風刺となる。
