German politician. Born in Mossenberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. Graduated from the University of Göttingen and is a lawyer. Joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of West Germany in 1963, served as a member of the Bundestag (lower house) from 1980 to 1986, and was Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 1990 to 1998. In 1998, the SPD won the federal election, and he became Prime Minister, forming a coalition government with the Green Party. From 1999 to 2004, he succeeded O. Lafontaine as SPD leader. In 2002, he was reappointed Prime Minister in the Bundestag. In 2005, in order to dissolve the Bundestag and hold an early general election, he submitted a motion of confidence that was rejected by the SPD's abstention, but he was narrowly defeated in the general election and resigned as Prime Minister. His successor was A. Merkel (1954-) of the Christian Democratic Union.

Schroeder

German actor and director. After working at the Burgtheater he became director at the Hamburg Theater, where he made great contributions to the promotion of original plays and realistic acting. He is credited with establishing Shakespeare in Germany. He also wrote several citizen plays.
