American novelist. Born into a poor Jewish working-class family in New York, he worked at a variety of jobs before beginning to write novels at the age of 17. Many of his historical novels are written from the perspective of the oppressed, including "A Day in the Life of Liberty" (1939), which deals with the War of Independence; "The Last Frontier" (1941), a story of cornered American Indians; "Citizen Tom Paine" (1943), which depicts the life of Thomas Paine; "Freedom's Way" (1944), which depicts the struggles of black people after the Civil War; and "Spartacus" (1951), which deals with a Roman slave rebellion. As a Communist Party member and writer, he was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953, but left the party in 1957, and published "The Naked God" in the same year, which tells the story of his departure from the party. Later, riding the wave of the rise of immigrant literature, she returned to the top of bestselling lists with her serial epic novels about Italian-French immigrant families, "The Immigrant" (1977), "The Second Generation" (1978), "The Establishment" (1979), "The Legacy" (1981), and "The Immigrant's Daughter" (1985). Her other works include "The Dinner Party" (1987), a comic-style depiction of the crisis in modern America, the historical work "The Jew" (1968), and her autobiography "The Red" (1990).
