The imperial tombs of the Western Han dynasty are the Ba Tomb of Emperor Wen and the She Tomb of Emperor Xuan, which are located in the hills south of Xi'an, while the other nine are all located on the north bank of the Wei River, in the Wuling Plains in Xianyang (five tombs have their own tomb towns). The identification of the imperial tombs was traditionally based on the theory of Biyuan (1730-97), but in recent years, field surveys and verification of ancient documents have led to a revised order: Maoling of Emperor Wu, Pingling of Emperor Zhao, Yanling of Emperor Cheng, Kangling of Emperor Ping, Weiling of Emperor Yuan, Yiling of Emperor Ai, Anling of Emperor Hui, Changling of Gaozu, and Yangling of Emperor Jing. The tomb system of the Han dynasty was inherited from that of the Qin dynasty, and it has huge fiefs shaped like truncated square pyramids. The Yangling and Weiling have sides of about 160m each and a height of about 30m, while the particularly large Maoling has a side of over 230m and a height of 46.5m.
