Grain boundary

Solid materials such as metals and ceramics are usually aggregates of numerous crystal grains. When adjacent crystal grains are of the same phase, the interface between them is called a grain boundary (also called a grain boundary or crystal boundary), and when they are of different phases, it is called a different phase interface or different phase boundary. The structure and properties of a different phase interface are similar in many ways to those of a grain boundary. In some cases, a thin layer of another phase is sandwiched between two adjacent crystal grains. Structurally, a grain boundary is an area where the atomic arrangement is disturbed. When the difference in orientation (orientation difference) between the crystal lattices on both sides is small, this disturbance is equivalent to the periodic arrangement of dislocations in the lattice.

金属，セラミックスなどの固体材料は，通常数多くの結晶の粒の集合体である。隣接する結晶粒の相が同じときには，両者の界面を結晶粒界(粒界，結晶境界ともいう)といい，両者の相が異なるときには異相界面または異相境界という。異相界面の構造，性質などは，多くの点で結晶粒界のそれに類似している。隣接する二つの結晶粒の間に，別の相の薄い層が挟まれている場合もある。構造的には，結晶粒界は原子配列の乱れた領域である。両側の結晶格子の向きの違い(方位差)が小さいときには，この乱れは格子中の転位の周期的配列と等しい。
