Born: 1770. Messenia [Died] February 15, 1843. Greek military leader born in the Peloponnese, Athens. Member of the secret society "Filiki Etheria". During the attack of the Ottoman Empire in 1805-06, he traveled to the Ionian Islands and served in the British conscripted army, gaining military experience. In August 1822, he defeated Dramalis Pasha, but was imprisoned in 1824-25 for rebelling against the National Assembly government established in Epidaurus in January of the same year. After his release, he achieved many military victories. Later, he became a leader of the pro-Russian faction in the government of Kapositorius. During the regency of Oson, he clashed with the government, was imprisoned, and sentenced to death, but the execution was suspended. In his later years, he dictated his memoirs, which were published in Greek and English.
