Mosan Art

Mosan Art
This is an art form that developed in the Middle Ages in the middle reaches of the Meuse River, which crosses Belgium. From the early 12th century to the 13th century, enamel cloisonné, gold engraving, ivory reliefs, and illuminated manuscripts were particularly popular. In gold engraving, there are excellent works such as the baptismal font of St. Bartholomew's Cathedral in Liège (1107-18, by Regnier de Huy), the Pentecost Altar (mid-12th century, Cluny Museum of the Middle Ages, Paris), Nicolas de Verdun's altarpiece for the Klosterneuburg Abbey Cathedral (1181), and the reliquary of St. Piatus and St. Nicasius in Tournai Cathedral (1205). Godfrey de Huy, who was active in Cologne, Germany, raised Mosan metalwork to an international standard. These works, based on Carolingian and Byzantine art, are the most dynamic and realistic of all Romanesque works, and are considered to be important sources of the Gothic Classical style of the 13th century.
