Entering the village - Murairi

Japanese: 村入り - むらいり

Becoming a new member of the village community and the formalities for doing so. After receiving a guarantor's introduction, one attends a village meeting and receives approval to join. In some cases, newcomers to the village from elsewhere had to wear wet straw sandals or appoint a straw sandal parent. Families who had migrated from elsewhere, newly branched off from a family within the village, and those who had married into a family within the village from elsewhere were required to go through the formalities for joining the village.

新しく村落社会の構成員となること，およびそのための手続儀礼。保証人の紹介を受けて村寄合に出席し，加入の承認を得る。他所から新たに村入りするには，濡れわらじ，わらじ親を立てる場合もあった。村入りの手続を要求されるのは，他所から移住してきた家，村落内の家から新しく分家した家，他所から村落内の家へ婿に来た者である。
