A group of young intellectuals who gathered at the home of the British sisters Vanessa (later Vanessa Bell) and Virginia (later Virginia Woolf) of the Stephen family, beginning around 1906. The name comes from the fact that the Stephen family home was located on Bloomsbury Street in London. Members included Clive Bell and Leonard Woolf, who would become the sisters' husbands, as well as JM Keynes, Lytton Strachey, Roger Fry, and EM Forster, and came from a wide range of fields, including art critics, political commentators, economists, and novelists. All of them were of the same generation and had studied at Trinity and King's College, Cambridge. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
