The incidents of arresting hidden Christians occurred in Urakami, Hizen Province (present-day Nagasaki City). There were four incidents, from the First Incident in 1790 to the Fourth Incident in 1867. In the three incidents from the First Incident to the Third Incident (1856), the shogunate and Nagasaki Magistrate's Office, fearing the incidents would escalate, tended to handle the incidents peacefully, treating the believers as "other sects" rather than as Christians, as in the Amakusa Incident. However, in the Fourth Incident, the believers had already confessed their faith at Oura Cathedral in 1865, so they were treated as Christians and persecuted, which led to a diplomatic issue after protests from foreign envoys. The new Meiji government also initially maintained its policy of banning Christianity, exiling the entire Urakami village, but in 1873 the ban on Christianity was lifted and the Urakami believers were released. → Petitjean Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
