Eckerman, JP - Eckerman

… The human and spiritual development of the poet Goethe can be divided into four periods. The first period was from his birth to his study in Leipzig (1765-68) and Strasbourg (now Strasbourg) in 1770, during which he met Herder, and then moved to Weimar in the autumn of 1775. The second period was during his busy ten years under Duke Karl August of Weimar, during which he was involved in political affairs and his love affair with Frau Stein. The third period was during his trip to Italy (1786-88), and continued until his return to Germany and the death of his friend Schiller (1805). The fourth period was during his later years, including his time as secretary to Johann Peter Eckermann (1792-1854). In the history of German literature, the period when Goethe began his literary career is called Sturm und Drang (Storm and Fury), and while Herder, who praised Ossian and Shakespeare, was its theoretical leader, Goethe truly opened up a new literary revolution with his lyric poems, including May Song (1770-71), his dramas, including Götz von Berlichingen (1773), and his novels, including The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774).
