… Historically, rock descriptions began to be widely used around the end of the 18th century. Then, in the second half of the 19th century, Germans such as F. Zirkel and H. Rosenbusch vigorously observed rocks under a microscope, and the descriptions, naming, and classification of rocks were systematized, establishing descriptive petrology as a field of geology. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, physical chemistry, especially chemical thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium theory, was introduced into the study of the origin of rocks, and genetic petrology developed rapidly. …
