Sichuan Magistrate - Shisenbugyo

Japanese: 四川奉行 - しせんぶぎょう

An office in the Edo Shogunate. A position under the Finance Magistrate, newly established in 1725 (Kyoho 10), it was responsible for flood control projects on four rivers: the Edo River, the Kinu River, the Kokai River, and the Shimo Tone River. In 1723, the area of responsibility was expanded to the entire Kanto region. Along with civil engineers who worked as construction officers (gokenin), they supervised regular construction and national construction. In 1731, it was abolished and absorbed into the duties of the Finance Magistrate. It had a capacity of three to four people, and at the time of its abolition, it consisted of four people: Shimizu Hisanojo, Shimada Heisuke, Suzuki Chuzaemon, and Yomota Sadayu. [Otani Sadao]

江戸幕府の職制。1725年(享保10)に新設された勘定奉行配下の役職で，江戸川，鬼怒川，小貝川，下利根川の4川の治水事業を担当した。28年には職掌地域が関東一帯に拡大された。土木技師としての普請役(御家人)とともに，定式普請や国役普請の指導監督に当たった。31年に廃止され，勘定奉行の職掌に吸収された。定員は3～4名で廃止時は清水久之丞，嶋田平助，鈴木忠左衛門，蓬田左大夫の4名。【大谷貞夫】
