Émile Verhaeren

Japanese: ベルハーレン - べるはーれん(英語表記)Émile Verhaeren
Émile Verhaeren

A Belgian national poet who wrote in French. Born to a family of woolen cloth weavers in Saint-Amand near Ambers. He discovered Rodenbach at a middle school in Ghent and became interested in literature. After graduating from the Catholic University of Leuven, he became a lawyer for a time, but continued his literary activities while still a student, and participated in the launch of the magazine Young Belgium in 1881. He published his first collection of poems, Flemish Women, in 1883, and The Monks in 1886. He then experienced a mental and physical crisis between 1887 and 1891, and wrote the trilogy Twilight (1887), Destruction (1888), and The Black Torch (1890) during this period. After "Visions of My Way" (1891), he started to recover, and became more interested in urban civilization and socialism, writing "Field of Hallucinations" (1893), "Phantom Village" (1895), and "City with Tentacles" (1895). During this time, he also broke with the magazine "Young Belgium" (1887). He settled in Paris in 1895, and sang of the power of nature and life in a series of works, from "The Many Faces of Life" (1899), "The Noisy Force" (1902), "The Five-Colored Splendor" (1906) to the posthumous publication "Fire in the Sky" (1918). At the same time, he wrote "The Bright Hour" (1896), "The Afternoon Hour" (1905), and "The Evening Hour" (1911), fueled by his love for his wife Marthe. He died in a train accident in Rouen on November 26, 1916.
