〘noun〙① To submit to the enemy after losing a battle, a dispute, or a competition. To surrender. To give in. ※From the Hogen period (around 1220): "If you have any courtesy, lay down your bow and surrender." ② To be helpless and at a loss over a troublesome matter. To be completely overwhelmed and troubled. To give up. ※Joruri, Man's Play Gogankin (1742), Ajigawa Shibai Ashi-zore: "What a sight, we all surrender, surrender." ※I Am a Cat (1905-06), Natsume Soseki, Chapter 9: "When he urged me to go dig for gold in the ditch outside, I gave in too."
