Six Jizo

Six Jizo
[1][1] Buddhist term. Six types of Jizo Bodhisattva that are said to be in each of the six realms and relieve the suffering of all living beings. That is, a general term for the Bodhisattva Danta, Hoju, Hoin, Jiji, Jogaisho, and Nikko. However, the name varies depending on the text. ※Konjaku (around 1120) 17 "The monk proclaimed, 'We are called the Six Jizo. We appear in six different forms for all living beings in the six realms.'" [2] Common name for Daizen-ji, a Jodo sect temple in Nishimachi, Momoyama-cho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. A life-size stone standing Jizo statue is enshrined in the Jizo Hall on the temple grounds. There may have originally been six statues. It is said that Ono no Takamura worshipped the living Jizo Bodhisattva in the underworld, and when he returned to the world, he carved six Jizo statues out of a single piece of wood and enshrined them here. It is also the name of a place near Daizen-ji. [1][一] 仏語。六道のそれぞれにあって、衆生の苦悩を救済するという六種の地蔵菩薩。すなわち、檀陀・宝珠・宝印・持地・除蓋障・日光菩薩の総称。ただし、典籍によって名称は異なる。※今昔(1120頃か)一七「小僧の宣はく、我等をば六地蔵と云ふ。六道の衆生の為に、六種の形を現ぜり」[二] 京都市伏見区桃山町西町にある浄土宗の寺、大善寺の通称。境内地蔵堂に等身の石地蔵立像を安置する。もとは六体あったものか。小野篁(おののたかむら)が冥土で生身の地蔵菩薩を拝し、娑婆に帰って一木で六体の地蔵尊像を刻み、ここに安置したと伝える。また、大善寺付近の地名。京都市と宇治市とにまたがる。※仮名草子・浮世物語(1665頃)二「六地蔵を伏し拝み、京橋に到り」[三] 狂言。大蔵・和泉流。いなか者が六地蔵を求めに都へ行く。都の詐欺師が仏師になりすまして六地蔵を作ることを約束し、仲間三人を地蔵に仕立てる。残りの三体は別の場所にあるといってその三人が先まわりしてごまかすが、結局露見する。[2] 〘名〙① ((一)(一)の信仰から) 寺、路傍、墓地などにまつられた六体の地蔵尊像。また、その地蔵堂。※雑俳・さざれ石(1730)「ならべたり・対の笠着る六地蔵」② 六か所の寺や堂に安置された地蔵尊。また、各所の地蔵尊のうちから特に六か所を選んだもの。(イ) 京都で地蔵巡りが行なわれる六か所の地蔵尊。時代によってちがいがあるが、一七世紀半ばごろ、一番御菩薩池(みぞろがいけ)(=現在の上賀茂深泥池のこと。地蔵尊はのち寺町鞍馬口上善寺に移る)、二番山科四ノ宮徳林庵、三番伏見六地蔵大善寺、四番上鳥羽浄禅寺、五番桂地蔵堂、六番常盤源光寺に固定し、今日に至っている。→六地蔵巡り。※伯家五代記‐資益王記・文明一四年(1482)七月二四日「遙拝、参六地蔵、〈西院、壬生、八田、屋禰葺、清和院、正親町西洞院〉」(ロ) 江戸では、品川の品川寺、四谷の太宗寺、巣鴨の真性寺、浅草の東禅寺、深川の霊巖寺・永代寺の六寺をいう。宝永年間(一七〇四‐一一)に地蔵坊正元の勧進により建立されたが、八百屋お七の冥福のために、吉三が建てたという俗説がある。※江戸砂子(1732)三「医王寺真性寺 御室末〈略〉地蔵坊正元法師建立唐銅六地蔵の三番目也」③ 六種の地蔵を石灯籠などに彫ったもの。江戸浅草寺の裏門を出た所に建てられた、高さ六尺(約一・八メートル)ほどの六角形の石灯籠が著名。※雑俳・柳多留‐一〇四(1828)「六地蔵真棒さすとお花独楽」
