The main raw minerals of nickel are pentlandite (a sulfide mineral) and siliceous nickelite (a hydrous silicate mineral). When the magma separates into silicate melt and sulfide melt, the nickel contained in ultrabasic to basic magma enters the sulfide melt together with copper, and when cooled, becomes a mixture of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite. When the magma solidifies without separating the sulfide melt, nickel Ni 2+ (ionic radius 0.69 Å) enters minerals containing magnesium (such as olivine (Mg,Fe,Ni) 2 SiO 4 ) due to its similarity to magnesium Mg 2+ (ionic radius 0.66 Å).
