The main raw minerals of nickel are pentlandite (a sulfide mineral) and siliceous nickelite (a hydrous silicate mineral). When the magma separates into silicate melt and sulfide melt, the nickel contained in ultrabasic to basic magma enters the sulfide melt together with copper, and when cooled, becomes a mixture of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite. When the magma solidifies without separating the sulfide melt, nickel Ni ²⁺ (ionic radius 0.69 Å) enters minerals containing magnesium (such as olivine (Mg,Fe,Ni) ₂ SiO ₄ ) due to its similarity to magnesium Mg ²⁺ (ionic radius 0.66 Å).

ニッケルのおもな原料鉱物はペントランド鉱(硫化鉱物)とケイニッケル鉱(含水ケイ酸塩鉱物)である。超塩基性～塩基性マグマに含まれているニッケルは，マグマのケイ酸塩メルト(溶融物)と硫化物メルトへの分離が起こると，銅とともに硫化物メルトに入り，冷却して磁硫鉄鉱，黄銅鉱，ペントランド鉱の混合物となる。マグマが硫化物メルトを分離せず固結する場合には，ニッケルNi^2＋(イオン半径0.69Å)はマグネシウムMg^2＋(同0.66Å)との類似性からマグネシウムを含む鉱物(カンラン石(Mg,Fe,Ni)₂SiO₄等)に入る。
