This pass is located on the border between Nagano and Toyama prefectures, at the saddle between Mount Harinoki (2,821 meters) and Mount Renge (2,799 meters) in the Northern Alps. At an elevation of 2,541 meters, it is the highest pass that crosses the Northern Alps. Currently, only mountaineers climb this pass, but from the end of the Sengoku period to the early modern period, it was a transportation route for importing salt and fish from Ecchu to Shinano. It is said that in 1584 (Tensho 12), Sassa Narimasa, the lord of Ecchu, and over 90 of his subordinates crossed the pass in the harsh winter to seek the help of Tokugawa Ieyasu of Mikawa in order to oppose Hashiba Hideyoshi. However, negotiations with Ieyasu were unsuccessful, so they crossed the pass again and returned to Ecchu. It is said that at this time, one million ryo of military funds were buried near the pass, and people are still searching for it today. The Harinoki Snow Valley is located on the northern slope of the pass. In conjunction with the mountain opening ceremony in June, the Shintaro Festival is held to commemorate Momose Shintaro, who built the Harinoki hut on the pass in 1930 (Showa 5).
