The sense of sound is based on vibrations in the air and is found in almost all land animals and some aquatic animals. Each has a variety of hearing organs, but mammals, including humans, have the cochlea as their hearing organ (sound receptor organ). The cochlea is part of the inner ear, but the other parts related to hearing are the middle ear, which animals acquire when they move from the water onto land, and the outer ear, which collects sound.
