A former town in the midstream of the Agano River in Higashikanbara County, Niigata Prefecture. Kanose, the main settlement in the river valley and through which the Ban'etsu West Line passes, developed after a dam was built in the early Showa period and a chemical fertilizer factory (Showa Denko, now Kanose Denko) was built using hydropower. In 1965, the Agano River mercury poisoning incident occurred due to factory wastewater. The town is home to the Agano River Line and Kirinzan Hot Springs. In April 2005, it merged with Tsugawa Town, Kamikawa Village, and Mikawa Village in Higashikanbara County to become Aga Town. 257.69 km2 . 2,852 people (2003). →Minamata disease Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
