Perboric acid (peroxoboric acid)

A general term for compounds in which a peroxo-O ₂ ^{2- atom} is coordinated in place of the oxygen atom bonded to the boron in boric acid. It is sometimes mistakenly called perboric acid. The free acid has not been obtained, but several alkali metal salts are known. A typical example is Na[(HOO)B(OH) ₃ ]･2H ₂ O, which is synthesized by the reaction of boric acid with sodium peroxide or by the electrolytic oxidation of a sodium borate solution. This is sometimes written as NaBO ₃ ･4H ₂ O. When dehydrated, the composition becomes NaBO ₃ ･3H ₂ O, NaBO ₃ ･H ₂ O, and at high temperatures it decomposes to anhydrous sodium metaborate NaBO ₂ , which is no longer a peroxo acid salt.
