…A Sumerian god, whose name means “faithful son.” In Aramaic texts and the Old Testament, he was called Tammuz. He is known for his myths of fighting with the herdsman Enkidu, winning the love of Inanna (Ishtar) and becoming her husband, and for descending to the underworld and being sent to the underworld in place of Inanna, who returned to earth, causing people to grieve.
