Landscape poetry - Sansui idyll

Japanese: 山水田園詩 - さんすいでんえんし

A type of Chinese poetry that primarily describes the landscape and attempts to express a higher state of mind that transcends the human world through contemplation of nature. Specifically, landscape poetry is a pure description of mountains and rivers, while pastoral poetry sings of rural landscapes, including the peasants working there. Landscape pastoral poetry is based on the idea that there exists a utopia in nature that is free from the suffering and constraints of the human world, an idea that is already present in hermits of the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, as seen in the Analects and Zhuangzi. Landscape poetry is linked to the idea of immortals, and tends to seek to find a mysterious spiritual world in the secluded mountains, isolated from the human world.

中国の詩の中で，叙景を主とし，自然観照の中に，人間界を越えた高い心境を表現しようとするもの。細別すると，山や川などの純粋叙景が山水詩，農村風景を，その中で働く農民の姿を含めて歌うのが田園詩である。　山水田園詩は，自然の中に，人間界の苦悩と束縛とにわずらわされないユートピアが存在するという思想に基礎を置くもので，このような思想はすでに《論語》や《荘子》に見える，春秋戦国時代の隠者にあらわれている。山水詩には，神仙思想と結びつき，人間界と隔絶した幽邃（ゆうすい）な山中に，神秘的な霊界を見いだそうとする傾向がある。
